Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has urged the External affairs minister Jaishankar to secure the release of 78 fishermen and their fishing boats abducted by Srilankan Navy.
In a letter to the Union Minsiter, the Chief Minister pointed out the latest arrest of fishermen, who were then taken to Mayillati islands by the Srilankan Coast Guards. He also said that the Centre must prevail upon the Srilankan government through the diplomatic channels to put an end to the tactics of Srilankan Navy.
In the letter, he also raised the issue of frequent arrest with Jaishankar. Two instances of attack and deaths of five fishermen had been reported in the span of one year, he pointed out.
The fishermen issue between India and Srilanka has been continuing since the end of civil war, and hampers the peaceful co-existence of the two South-Asian nations.
