Efforts are on to capture a leopard near Covai without using tranquilizer

The Forest Department is interested on capturing the leopard holed up in an abandoned warehouse in Coimbatore without using a tranquilizer dart.

Principal Chief Wildlife Warden Shekhar Kumar Niraj said on Tuesday that he had not given an order to tranquilize the animal. But he has asked the forest staff to trap the animal. The unused warehouse at B.K. Pudur, has two doors where the forest staff have placed cages, so that the carnivore can be trapped while it comes out. To lure the leopard, the two cages have live dogs as bait. The dogs are kept in such a way in partition of the cage so that they will not be harmed.

Assistant Conservator of Forests C.Dinesh Kumar, forest veterinarians A. Sukumar (Coimbatore division), Rajesh Kumar (Mudumalai Tiger Reserve) and Madukkarai forest range officer P. Santhiya are camping at the place.
