In the recent Sustainable Development Goal(SDG) Urban Index of NITI Aayog, Coimbatore ranked second place followed by Shimla. The city got a score of 73.29 with 77 SDG indicators across 46 targets like health, education, poverty reduction, climate action, etc. Trichy, with a score of 70, also made into top 10.
Among the considered parameters, Coimbatore stands first at poverty reduction; fourth in quality education; fifth in industry, innovation and infrastructure; and eighth in gender equality.
The SDG Urban Index is said to strengthen SDG localisation, and instituted monitoring at municipal level, which will further help in effective policy making.
