The Indian government has cleared a proposal to raise the legal marriage age for women from 18 to 21, the same as it is for men.
The idea is based on the suggestions of the task force commissioned under Jaya Jaitley by the Centre to look into concerns such as maternal age, the imperatives of lowering MMR (Maternal Mortality Rate), nutritional levels, and other connected factors. In general, the measure is aimed at empowering women and to attain gender equality.
This approval comes a year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the proposal on India’s Independence Day, in 2020.
