AIIMS Hospital Octagon – Work to begin only in 2023

It has been reported that the construction work for the AIIMS Hospital located in Toppur, Madurai District will start in 2023 and will be completed in 2026. In this situation, the people of the southern districts, including Madurai, are very disappointed. The decision to set up the AIIMS Hospital in Madurai was taken on 28th February 2015 after a series of examinations announced by the Government of India for the benefit of the people of the Southern District including Madurai. In this context, the Government of India entered into a loan agreement on March 26, 2021 with the Japanese organization JICA to finance the construction of the AIIMS Hospital at Madurai. In this case, the hospital was declared a revised project estimate of Rs. 1977.80 crores. Of this, it was decided that Rs. 1627.70 crore would be provided by JICA and the balance by the Government of India. Following this, the project implementation committee and its posts were created. AIIMS has been licensed to operate in 22 locations in India, of which 6 are already operational. The remaining 16 hospitals are under construction in several states. In this context, a meeting was held on July 16 last year to decide on the Federal Government’s recommendations on AIIMS. On behalf of the Madurai AIIMS Hospital, a recommendation was made to the Government of India for the temporary admission of 50 MBBS students in Madurai, Theni and Sivagangai Medical Colleges for the first phase. In this context, despite a petition filed on behalf of the United Kingdom in the Madurai branch of the High Court that the contract with Japan be finalized on March 31, 2021, no construction work has yet taken place other than the erection of the perimeter wall at Madurai Toppur remarkable. Despite occasional comments by Union and state ministers about the workings of the Ames Hospital, confusion over its full form persisted. Meanwhile, at an executive level meeting last June, it was reported that construction work of the AIIMS Hospital would begin in 2023 and be completed in 2026.
