Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, Founder of Isha Foundation, appreciated  the move by Government of Tamil Nadu to amend names of 1,018 places in accordance with Tamil pronunciation.

Sadhguru tweeted: “Tamil, a richly evocative language, also one of the oldest civilizations. Places were named for their legendary cultural, historical & spiritual significance. Must preserve nomenclature that evokes in people a sense of Oneness with their Land.”

Recently, Sadhguru had also tweeted in favour of renaming India as Bharat: “Nation can come of age only when it unshackles itself from Occupation history. ‘India’, a given name, can never resonate as deeply as ‘Bharat’- a name with cultural & historical power. This is not about renaming but about reclaiming Bharat.’’

The state government recently decided to replace the anglicized names of places with local names, mostly by making minor amendments to the English spelling to accommodate Tamil pronunciation. The move was welcomed both by Tamil scholars and the general public. A gazette notification states the changes will take effect from 1 April 2020.
